Azimuth and Head Adjustment terminology
Most tapes don't have an overbias dB spec, so how do you it without knowing the overbias ? Match 1kHz level to 15kHz with bias adjustment ?
🙏🙏
Super professional job and education. Thanks from far far away 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video & speaking style
Tele definitely sounded better
I now want a light thing to watch when I listen to music lol
For the 8 channel snake it would be same idea for a TRS connector as well? Snip the copper shielding and use the drain wire? Thanks
That's a good question normally I would.
That's a good question normally I would.
That's a good question normally I would. Though if there wasn't a good strain relief on the connector or a boot I might use the whole shield to make it stronger
These are for the back of a patch bay, i opted for rean connectors for the TRS plugs to save abit of coin. These wont seen constant plugging/unplugging so i may be good with the drain! Will test it out! Btw thanks for you vids, made 5 dsub connectors yesterday!
Hi, Does it matter if a couple of strands break off from the red or white ?? Does it affect the quality?
Depends on the wire. Generally no. Wont affect the audio quality, but it could be more prone to breakage.
Under rated video! How tf does the other AI shit videos get more views than this High quality video
I have a question, a bit mysterious, I have a rode ntg3 and it has a bit of hiss. I have two cables, one soldered the three pins as in the video and the other cable only two, pin 1 and 3. and the mic makes a little less hiss. why will it be? for what is this? thank you
I can only assume the mic is running unbalanced and the noise is half, but the level of the audio is also half. So even though you hear less noise the signal to noise is not improved.
Why would you waste our time and not specifically explain what color wires from the trrs cable to connect to what color wires on the trs cable. Thats the whole point of making the video, and you did everything but the most important for those of us who don't know shit about electrical wiring.
Unlike electrical wall power wiring, there is no absolute color code for audio cables. The color can change depending on the wire manufacturer. As a general rule, red is usually hot or tip, and black is low. But some wires have different colors usually on multichannel cables, and in those a clear plastic insulator is lowm headphones again will vary by manufacturer. So these are good guidelines but not absolute. It's best to look at the other end if possible. If not you need to test with a voltmeter. Beyond the scope of this soldering video.
Thank You :)🔴®👍✌
Where do you get the clear capillary tubing you put over the drain wire?
You can Google PTFE tubing, here is one source I trust. www.redco.com/PTFE-Tubing-Insulation/
Great content and production. Thank you!
Brings back memories!
Awesome thank you!
One of the best videos about gear that I ever watched on RUclips

Electroluminescent light sources like this are brighter at higher frequencies, though in practice I see them get dimmer after a kHz or so, this may differ depending on the manufacture method and choice of phosphor. If the audio waveform is being fed directly into the EL panel, the effective controlling variable won’t be the input waveform’s amplitude, but rather the amplitude of the differential of the input waveform. With the taper off. So I’d expect it to be much worse at attenuating bass than mids, sparkly loud cymbals would probably get through too.
Interesting, I don't have a unit handy to observe this, but I will say in general with music low mid and low frequencies at at a much higher amplitude than higher frequencies. The manual somewhat contradicts itself. Page 7 " The amount of light depends on the applied voltage and frequency"...... There is a a high frequency boost on the rear for gain reduction. ( similar to dessing ) The manual states in regards to this control. Page 12 of the manual. " If the control is set to the flat position, the LA 3A will provide equal reduction at all frequencies" .
cant you just combine all the ground onto 1 pin? then use the extra pins for more channels?
This is a standard wiring used on most audio devices and patch bays. So if you wanted to make your own non standard cable I guess you could, but I expect it would be messy using all those extra wires feeding the connector.
Great video and so good to hear what a high level FOH plugins are using and how
good practical tips. I'm less of a hamfisted neandertal - which is good progress!! Thanks - keep up the good work!
Yo this a Awsome Reel 2 Reel equipment
BBC Radio has a collectionof very rare and early recordings (78's etc..). Obviously over the years the records were scratched and son. The Beeb would transfer these to quarter inch at 30 inches/second. Then some poor sod had to go through the entire tape and physically cut out all plops, scratches etc.and rejoin the taper.
Way back in the late 70's I was just beginning my career as television sound engineer / sound recordist. There was a weekly programme which highlighted the Top Ten records for that week. Part of my job was to take those top ten singles and whip out 10 seconds of each one and join them all together. It was done using quarter inch tape, exactly as in the video. Took most of a day shift to do it and get it to sound right (beats, bars etc..) but after you've done it a while, it becomes fairly easy.
who else is here for that tightly executed groove!!!
This is wizardry. So much respect for the old school engineers.
I have a friend who is blessed with the possession of a Nakamichi Dragon. What’s fascinating is the have a signal generator inside to set bias. The procedure requires switching between 400hz and 15khz to get everything set right. *The real kicker* is my Onkyo TA-2700 states in the manual that to set bias, to use an fm tuner set in between stations to generate “white noise” and calibrate at to match the sound of the source at -10db.
Optical compressors are way cooler to me now thanks for the video 🤘💀🍻🔥
Pretty close to how I do it, but here in NZ I can't seem to find "sodder", and have to make do with "solder". 🙂 I was taught to use the holes in the terminals, and that the tinned wire and terminal should have a good mechanical connection first; then the sodder guarantees the electrical connection, and the wire cannot move while the sodder is cooling, which prevents crystallisation.
Well your right that using the holes is stronger, and will prevent movement when cooling, it also causes me to curse much if I ever need to desolder. Good thing I wasn't using aluminum solder, that would have an aural disaster 😂.
@@biasedaudio Yeah, aluminium is much better! 🙂
Great video. I came here searching for a technique to crimp the strain relief… but I see that your technique is the same as mine; good ol’ needle nose pliers! I figured that an experienced pro like you would surely have a purpose built crimper for that job. But no. Nevertheless, very instructive and amazing soldering and assembly skills. Many thanks for posting, glad I subscribed. Cheers!
I did have one comment on this video that they used a BNC or RF connector crimp on quarter inch strain relief. It sounds like a good idea but I haven't tried it myself.
thank you from Argentina, first time im actually getting this stuff. incredible showcase!
I swear I'll never complain again
you're the best.
You edited the right reel of tape. I "dig" that song and love it very much.⭐
is it possible two female XLR to RCA connector? Pls.and how?thank you.
Short answer is no. Two female xlr's tied together would short the outputs. The solution is beyond the scope of this video.
I would love to see something like this for pre amps and DIs.
Now that is really amazing Wish i had a teacher like you
Very strange how you solder the shield, but i think the idee is not so bad. The next time i need to solder a TRS jack i wil try it out.
where did you download the driver been searching for hours can't find it
If you google fiio e10k TC driver you will find. I found it right away.
What is called "low" and what is "high" in audio cables please?
Low and high or positive and negative or plus and common relate to the input or the output of the device you're connecting. This keeps the polarity of the signals aligned. For a simple example an unbalanced connection you have the shield or ground which doesn't carry the signal and then you have the Plus or positive or high which does carry the signal space I'm currently working on a video that explains balanced and unbalanced circuits that may help it should be up soon
"Brilliant" presentation! Thank you SO much!
I thought about fixing my analog cassette tascam.but plugging it into the audio jacks of a VCR and using another VCR as my playback so i can overdub.VHS tape is nice and wide.i havent fleshed out the idea fully but ill let you know if it works.be cool to wind it onto reels and use it on an 8track reel to reel recorder
My tascam dp8 has Auto mastering.and it converts to WAV file.im going to put 14 songs on a flashdrive and mail it to a record lathe company.my budget and knowledge is limited.so should i pan my bass and drums to 1 side, like right or left? And should overall master be somewhat loud?i usually set my master volume at 4 and it sounds OK on cd.doesnt overwork my speakers.any info would be appreciated.also my terminology is rudimentary.
Now I know🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾Thank you sir
What size Teflon tubing do you use? I only see up to #24 on that website?
I like to run it a little large. I think I normally use 20-22. It's hard to thread when it's too close to the wire size
@@biasedaudio I will try a 22 to be safe! Thanks!!
Hi , as long as the wire strippers are atleast 12-28awg ill be good to cut these? Thanks
Should be usually that wire is in the 22 to 24 gauge range.
Awesome , thanks
Knipex has an option for 10-24awg, those should be fine or cutting it close?
Which connector would you recommend?
I would buy the best you could afford at redco.com . I am not compensated to say this. I just use them.
Thanks! Theres nothing really that expensive on redco. i just to get something thats good!
